Goole Town book author needs your help

The first book written on the history of Goole Town Football Club has raised a brilliant amount of cash for charity.

Author Martin Jarred has revealed that Alzheimer’s Research UK (ARUK) is to receive £3,214 from his book ‘Pleasure and Pain’. Martin, who was born in Skelton, near Howden, gave a talk to Boothferry Family and Local History Group at The Courtyard, where he sold more of his books. He said: “The time has come for me to send the proceeds to Alzheimer’s Research UK. I’d like to thank everyone who bought the book and the people of Goole who have helped me promote it. “I’m delighted with the amount that has been raised.”

Martin chose to support Alzheimer’s Research UK because a close family member is suffering from the onset of dementia. Although ‘Pleasure and Pain’ is virtually sold out, it may not be the end of the Goole Town story. Martin is now researching the players who have turned out for the club from its birth in 1905 to its demise in 1996. He added: “I’ve discovered that one player was shot dead in a riot and another died abroad in an earthquake. You never know there may be another book in it to raise more money for Alzheimer’s Research UK.” Martin recently acquired a team photograph that did not appear in ‘Pleasure and Pain’ which he believes was taken between 1958 and 1960 and would like help from Goole Times readers in identifying the players. The man in the middle of the front row is player-manager Martin Reagan. The trainer on far left of the back row is Percy ‘Pep’ Marritt with the club’s greatest goalscorer, Brian Howard, next to him. Walter Brewin is third from the right next to the goalkeeper. Ken Harrison is far left on the front row. Anyone who can identify this line-up can email Martin at jarreds@globalnet.co.uk
