The Ashes Playing Field Trust have officially opened their new all-weather track ‘The Howden Mile’.
The Ashes received £17,000 from East Riding of Yorkshire Council as part of Commuted Sums from local housing developments to put towards the track, and added £77,810.80 from their own funds. At the official opening, Katie Winter, who lives in Howden and is a Friend of the Ashes, completed 75 laps of the track throughout a ‘dawn till dusk’ challenge which others joined her for throughout the day, completing their own circuits of the track.
Angela Martinson, Treasurer at The Ashes Playing Field Trust, said: “The Ashes Playing Field Trust are delighted at the use and populatiryt of the all-weather artificial track they have installed around the circumference of the playing field, made possible by a generous donation and supported by Commuted Sums from East Riding of Yorkshire Council. “Officially known as the Howden Mile, as completion of two laps is equal to a mile, the track is designed to enable all age groups and abilities to develop an active lifestyle, whatever the weather. Set in the beautiful surroundings of the The Ashes Playing Field, a walk, jog or run around the Howden Mile can help both the mental and physical well-being of all users.” Cllr Claire Holmes, portfolio holder for planning, infrastructure and housing, added: “Congratulations to The Ashes Playing Field Trust on their recent official opening of the Howden Mile all-weather track, and it’s very pleasing that Commuted Sums provided by local housing developments as a condition of their planning approval have made a significant contribution.”
