Helping Others opens warm space in shop

December 13, 2022

Goole charity, Helping Others has launched a warm space to help local residents this winter.

The charity has set up a cosy corner within its shop on Pasture Road where people are welcome to sit, keep warm and relax. With plentiful supply of warm drinks and biscuits, people are welcome to stay as long as they want. The charity’s manager, Melanie Charlton said: “We have heard about warm spaces being set up in other places but haven’t seen anything like this open in Goole. The warm space is open from 8.30am-4pm daily and anyone is welcome to come and spend as long as they need. We’ve seen people coming in who are lonely and want a chat, people who struggling to pay for their bills coming in to keep warm, it really is here for everyone.”

The charity have not yet been able to access funding towards the warm space so are asking generous local people to help them fund the space and also continue all the other vital services. Melanie said: “We live in a diverse community and we help people from a huge range of backgrounds. We have link services with agencies such as the NHS, the local food bank, DEVAP and local schools. “We have helped people with all sorts, from providing items for people fleeing domestic abuse, to helping people sort their bills out and giving our volunteers a place to learn skills, gain confidence and meet new friends. We can also refer people to other organisations that can support them if we can’t”. To raise funds to allow them to keep their doors open, the charity has launched an Aviva Community Fund page, where people can donate online. Not only will the page allow people to donate money to help the charity, but Aviva will also double all donations, up to £250, meaning the charity will benefit even further. Melanie concluded: “The public are absolutely fantastic, we have had so much support from the people of Goole and would like to thank everyone who continues to support us.”
